Kalle’s Inn Resort is located in a place unlike anywhere else. Our location is truly unique: we are situated in Korsholm municipality, right near Replot (Raippaluoto), at the very end of the road where the open sea begins. From Vaasa, it is just under 50 km to reach us.
This is the heart of the Kvarken Archipelago – Finland’s only natural UNESCO World Heritage Site. Together with the High Coast in Sweden, it forms an area where post-glacial land uplift can be experienced more clearly than anywhere else in the world.
Kalle’s Inn Resort is situated in a historic and strategic location at the narrowest point of the Kvarken area. When you look out from your glass house towards the sea, you are looking directly towards Sweden. On your way here, you cross the Replot Bridge, which at 1,045 meters is the longest bridge in Finland and a striking gateway to the World Heritage area. The traditional fishing village of Svedjehamn is nearby, offering a glimpse into the area’s centuries-old culture.
Kvarken is an area in constant change. Land uplift here is so rapid that new land rises from the sea at approximately 8–9 millimeters per year – meaning about one hectare of new land annually! UNESCO inscribed the area as a World Heritage Site in 2006 as a geological laboratory without equal.
According to UNESCO criteria, Kvarken is one of the best places in the world to understand the impact of the Ice Age:
De Geer moraines: In the archipelago, hundreds of long and narrow moraine ridges can be seen, formed at the end of the Ice Age when the continental ice sheet melted. From above, they resemble giant washboards.
Land uplift phenomenon: The ice sheet once pressed down the Earth’s crust, and after it melted, the land continues to rise as the pressure is released.
Dynamic nature: This is one of the few World Heritage Sites in the world where the landscape itself changes within a human lifetime – islands merge and bays turn into lakes.
Birdlife and nature: The archipelago is an important stopover for thousands of migratory birds. Sea eagles are also commonly seen here.
Stay on marked trails: The nature is sensitive – by following marked paths, you help protect the unique flora.
Silence: At our resort, you experience the stillness of the archipelago without light pollution or city noise. This also makes the northern lights a frequent sight above the glass houses.
We are honored to be part of and protect this fragile and valuable area. From our glass houses, you have a front-row seat to the World Heritage landscape: you can see the sea meeting the rocky shores and the sky arching over the unique archipelago.
Welcome to the end of the road – where the land rises and time stands still.
